The Hon. Barry A. Schwartz is a judge for the Denver County Court in Colorado. He was appointed to the bench by Mayor Michael Hancock on September 22, 2016, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Robert B. Crew.


Prior to his appointment, Schwartz was a senior assistant city attorney for the Denver City Attorney’s Office, a position to which he was named in 2013. In that capacity, he represented the city and its employees in state tort and federal civil rights matters. Before that, he spent time as an assistant federal public defender for the Federal Public Defender’s Office in Colorado.


Schwartz earned a bachelor’s degree in history and English language and literature from the University of Colorado Boulder in 1983. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Denver, Sturm College of Law in 1988.


After graduating from law school, Schwartz began his legal career as a judicial law clerk to the Hon. Raymond Dean Jones and the Hon. Peter Ney of the Colorado Court of Appeals. He subsequently moved to New York, where he spent another year clerking in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.


Schwartz quickly returned to Colorado and entered into private practice as a litigation attorney for various law firms in Denver. He specialized in civil trial court and appellate litigation in state and federal courts, supplementing his practice with federal criminal and habeas litigation. By 2005, he had become a partner at Kamlet Reichert.


His memberships have included the Colorado Supreme Court’s Board of Law Examiners.


Born and raised in Denver, Colorado, Schwartz attended George Washington High School. He is the son of a lawyer. His wife has worked as a teacher and a small business owner.
