BERRIEN COUNTY, MI — Police have identified a motorcyclist killed in a hit-and-run crash, while the driver of the other vehicle involved is in jail waiting to be arraigned on multiple charges.
Motorcyclist Thomas Hoiles, 35, of Benton Harbor was killed in the crash that happened about 9:10 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 16, the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. An autopsy will be conducted at the Western Michigan School of Medicine in Kalamazoo on Wednesday Nov. 18, to determine his cause of death, the sheriff’s office said.
Police said a man was arrested and lodged at the Berrien County Jail on offenses including operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing death and leaving the scene of crash. The man had not been arraigned as of Tuesday afternoon, court records show.
Investigators on scene found that a motorcycle driven by the victim was traveling north on Union Street and approaching the main entrance to the Briarwood Apartments when a southbound vehicle made a left turn into the apartment entrance, pulling into the path of the motorcycle. The motorcycle impacted the car on the passenger side and the operator of the motorcycle was ejected.
Investigation showed that the motorcyclist had a helmet on at the time of the crash, however, it was not buckled and came off in the crash.
The driver of the car then fled the scene, but police located the suspect vehicle a short time later, police said. https://www.mlive.com/news/kalamazoo/2020/11/police-identify-motorcyclist-killed-in-hit-and-run-crash.html
