An Alamogordo police officer is on administrative leave after he allegedly drove his patrol car while intoxicated.
Michael Dias was charged with driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident and negligent use of a deadly weapon.
Dias allegedly struck a stop sign around 8 a.m. Feb. 5, then fled from the scene on the 800 block of Cuba Avenue.
The only damage was to the APD marked vehicle; the speed limit sign was knocked down, APD Chief Brian Peete said.
“We just have to respect him and his family in this very difficult time, and we’re focused on transparency to all parties involved,” Peete said.
Dias did not suffer injuries, and neither were any other people involved.
Dias was incarcerated into the Otero County Detention Center in lieu of bond.
An internal investigation is pending, during which Dias will remain on leave.
There have not been any previous issues with Dias’ performance, Peete said.
“We want to make sure that we respect his due process,” Peete said. https://www.alamogordonews.com/story/news/local/community/2019/02/05/alamogordo-police-officer-charged-dwi-leaving-scene-accident-deadly-weapon/2780964002/
